6.1 How To Write In Middle School — The 6th Grade Persuasive Essay

how to write in middle school the sixth-grade persuasive essay background the common course standards require that sixth graders write with a persuasive writing structure in seventh grade the standards require students to use an argumentative persuasive writing structure an argument has two sides or opposing claims the seventh grade writer must now acknowledge alternate or opposing claims the standards evolve again for eighth graders they must acknowledge and distinguish the claim from alternate or opposing claims so one of the big idea paragraphs must identify an opposing claim and explain why the claim is not valid further the core standards expect students to use accurate and credible sources this implies that they should research the information needed to address the claims in an argumentative persuasive writing structure this first persuasive writing structure piece makes use of prior knowledge as the students information and is appropriate to begin sixth grade the writing structure you choose to organize your writing is based on your goal when you want to persuade you use a persuasive writing structure when you want to present information you use an informational structure when you want to tell a story you use a narrative structure these are three predictable writing structures we use to organize our thinking this is your first persuasive writing assignment for sixth grade what do you do when it is cold outside and you want to have fun think about winter write an essay that states your opinion what you think is the most fun thing to do in winter the words opinion and most signal that a persuasive writing structure is needed other words that signal a persuasive structure are begin by thinking about the topic and activating any prior knowledge it’s cold outside during the winter how do you have fun there are no wrong answers at this point generate a list of ways you have fun both inside and outside you for example here’s a possible list of ways to have fun you could have suggested walk my dog here’s some big ideas associated with walking your dog again each phrase is a placeholder for a big idea it would look like this on your graphic organizer and like this in your essay you choose your way to have fun and write down a list of associated ideas look at your list of associated ideas can you express the idea in different words can you develop the idea with explanations and examples your ability to develop the idea is the determining factor in whether or not you should use it circle the three ideas you think you can best develop each of your ideas is a reason you think your choice is the best way to have fun when it’s cold out under each reason you’re going to write down phrases details and examples that you could use to develop your reason into a paragraph you’re still gathering so only write short notes or placeholders later you’ll write these as complete thoughts when you assemble your first draft last time you began work on a prompt that asked your opinion what do you think is the most fun thing to do in the winter when it is cold outside you chose something to claim as the most fun and brainstormed associated big ideas three of the big ideas were put in a graphic organizer with phrases details and examples to develop into complete paragraphs today you’re going to assemble a first draft before you do go back and examine your graphic organizer are the explanations details and examples clearly associated to the big idea do you have three strong Big Idea groups work here makes the writing so much easier a persuasive essay has a predictable structure predictable structures enable us to write our thoughts clearly and logically and more importantly make it easier for others to read and understand our writing the opening paragraph must do three things first it must look the reader’s attention second it must lay out the issue and third it must push the reader in one direction think of the phrase hip here are five common ways of hooking the reader’s attention ask a question posed a riddle use a quote make a strong announcement or provide a very short anecdote write your hook sentence or sentences laying out the issue is done by taking apart the prompt and rewriting it with different words this explains what you’re talking about to the reader right your issue sentences the last sentence of your opening paragraph is where you push the reader towards your choice again drawn the words in the prompt to write this sentence this special sentence in your opening paragraph is sometimes called a thesis statement other ways of starting this last sentence are complete your opening paragraph the goal of persuasive writing is to change the opinion of someone who disagrees with you as such you want your reader to think clearly and understand your claim clarity of thought explanations specific relatable examples and credible sources are the writer’s tools sentiment fades over time while clear thinking will grow stronger decide which Big Idea group will be your strongest it’s the one you can develop most strongly with explanations and examples write a 1 next to it which Big Idea will be your next strongest paragraph give it a to the last section gets a three how do you organize your paragraphs in a persuasive essay some suggest your strongest paragraphs should go first you have the reader’s attention and they can think clearly some suggest that your strongest Big Idea group should go last this method works best for writers with an engaging style that maintains the reader’s attention decide on the order of your big idea paragraphs right your first big idea in a clear and simple sentence use signaling words that indicate your reason is the beginning of a series and/or to show emphasis after this opening sentence write a more detailed explanation for the younger writer this might mean they say the same thing as their first sentence but using different words older writers develop the explanation with a few sentences developing the explanation is an area where the skillful writer can thrive the first responsibility is to provide clear thinking your explanation must make your reason more clear but you can also create an emotional reaction by using a specific example with which the reader can associate your next big idea paragraph has to connect to this first Big Idea paragraph you do this by using linking words right your next idea in a clear and simple sentence but use signaling words that indicate your reason is the next of a series under this first sentence write a more detailed explanation you your final Big Idea paragraph has to connect to the other two Big Idea paragraphs use signalling words that this is your last big idea to start your opening sentence under the sentence write a more detailed explanation in your closing paragraph you’re responsible for three things you need to signal the end of the essay you need to push the reader towards your position by restating your ideas and finally you must prompt the reader to continue to think about your ideas after they’re done reading there are two common ways of signalling the end of your essay the first is to use words that signal a conclusion this also allows you to restate your opinion the second method to signal a conclusion is to repeat elements from your opening attention-grabber this echo of your opening creates a circle this signals to your reader that the essay is finishing the next sentence serves to remind the reader of your three big ideas they are only mentioned as phrases they are not developed as complete ideas the last part of your essay should prompt the reader to continue to think about your ideas after they’re done reading mention something bigger associated with the topic of your essay give the reader something to think about you you spent your first day gathering and creating all the elements for your essay you put them in a graphic organizer for a persuasive structure the next day was spent assembling the elements into sentences and paragraphs you wrote using signalling words to organize and connect your ideas this last day is for revisions revised means to look at again you’ll reread your essay five times each time through a new lens on your first read-through you want to see if your essay is focused on your topic do all of your big ideas connect to your claim on your second read-through you want to see if you have enough content do you have opening and closing paragraphs do you have three fully developed big idea paragraphs supported with explanations details and example add any missing elements on your third read-through you want to see if your essay is organized so that it’s easily understood do you use signalling words to connect your ideas are your big idea paragraphs arranged to best support your claim move things around if you need to on your four three two you want to examine your writing style do your sentences begin the same way do write with long and short sentences do you use dialogue do you set the right tone on your fifth read-through you want to see if you use standard writing conventions complete sentences fragments verb agreements spelling punctuation some people read the essay backwards one sentence at a time to check for conventions you good job you

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands — Before You Buy

game ranks presents another episode of before you buy the show we give you some of our straight-up gameplay and our thoughts on the latest games releasing as always I’m your guy Jake Baldino and I apologize I’m very sick my voice probably sounds worse than it usually does but let’s talk about Ghost Recon wildlands this is a difficult game to play as an old-school fan of the series but if you’re like me you just got to get that out of the way right now this does not really feel like it goes recon game much at all it’s not really a reboot or a spiritual successor it’s just kind of its own new thing that’s not necessarily a bad thing just something to get over but was it worth really ditching the vibe of the classic Ghost Recon games as well as Advanced Warfighter in future soldier games yeah I think that’s really up for debate wildland sets up like this you create your own custom character with a pretty limited set of tools and then you drop behind enemy lines in the country of Bolivia to systematically take down drug cartels and the big bad guy who is actually pretty cool looking else way know how you tackle all this and the order in which you dismantle is completely up to you this is where wildlands is going to impress the map is absolutely huge I’d almost argue that it’s too huge but for some players you know the bigger the better it’s filled with things of you there’s missions to accomplish this Intel together to get new locations and items their supplies to tag to aid in your progression there’s really no issue here about things ever really being boring there’s always something to do in wild lands that’s just how it’s designed it also feels more like a Ubisoft map filled Far Cry style game more than something like the division which is honestly what I was expecting it to feel like this is going to make or break it right here for some people here seriously a lot here but at least thankfully the large size does give way to plenty of visual variety in the environment there’s a lot of different biomes that you’re going to be dealing with here they’ve basically made an entire Bolivia with mountains streams jungles frozen areas cities small towns deserts basically everything of course it’s exaggerated because it’s a video game but there’s just a lot going on here and exploring it could be kind of fun you’ll definitely realize how big it all is the first time you fly up in a plane or a helicopter it has 20 ish regions to conquer and each one can take an hour or so depending on the difficulty but I definitely recommend playing on a harder difficulty mode for like more of a real ghost I’m feeling experienced at least something like that even still mechanically wildlands is more simplistic than I was hoping thankfully though it still manages to feel somewhat tactical compared to your average shooter of this generation you know encounters and faces usually favor a stealthy approach you get it it’s all about creeping around using binoculars and drones to tag your enemies and then get in a Koppel XI objective and get out probably pop off some headshots in between you can rapidly switch between two weapons at a sidearm and its really nice that you have a choice of on-the-fly removing your suppressor and changing your rate of fire mode you even have some light squad commands here for your three other AI control partners following you like I said it seems simpler than older school tactical assault stealth games you know it’s no classic reticle based ghost recon or SOCOM u.s. Navy SEALs but it’s fun and rewarding enough thankfully aiming controls allow you to switch between over-the-shoulder and first-person this really makes the shooting controls pretty solid you feel effective and smooth pulling off headshots or going in guns blazing and while that is what it retains from Ghost Recon is that the game favors a stealthy approach going in guns blazing doesn’t feel like you’re doing it wrong at all because of controls so well some people might feel to be a little clunky but I otherwise enjoyed it while there are progression systems here and there which I’ll get you the big one is faction management and you’re standing within working with rebels for example that’s you more abilities to call in which all works pretty well and incentivize me at least to work towards them but as much as there is to do scenarios within the narrative often really take themselves very seriously despite the rest of the game coming off kind of as light-hearted and fun dealing a Lamborghini from a drug dealer in an early mission should be crazy and fun silly but the moments kind of fall flat I think mostly deuces and non-existing characters they’re just boring with some mostly lame voice Aguila mom thankfully though it can mostly be ignored you know you know what you have to do I did encounter quite a variety of loves on ps4 though getting stuck in environments and clipping through vehicles but really the biggest offender here is the team AI while they are a pretty good shot the majority of times they’re extremely dumb and I noticed that getting into vehicles really becomes a chore very quickly but this is where the good stuff comes in you should really kick those AI teammates to the curb on their ass because drop in drop out co-op works great here you barely have to even think about it before being matched up with friends or random it all works pretty seamlessly and smartly with minimal lag or matchmaking issues at least so far while I noticed it’s a four-player squad-based game if you’re only playing with one friend the game doesn’t populate the other two characters with AI you’re just on your own and it’s funny because you hear some of the dialogue from non existing characters that aren’t even in a game sometimes other than that the game takes a multiplayer approach into account very well the game’s enemies repopulate based on how many friends you’re playing with and then good times are to be had some people think this is a weakness and sometimes it is but I truly think Ghost Recon wildlands is much better with friends it basically saves the game this is where the game can get both highly tactical and incredibly goofy which i think is a nice balance spotting enemies with friends is easier and you feel badass when you’re communicating and dominating through an encounter then in the next second you’re all skydiving out of a plane free-falling and parachuting into an enemy base or driving a dirt bike down a mountain this stuff is where the game completely kicks a bit of ass although the driving mechanics are kind of clunky at best of course you can always adjust sensitivity but it still just comes down to poor mechanic except for steering the dirtbike I think they nailed that and then it feels really cool I think this game is for a very specific type of player the thing that ultimately turned me off were the progression systems they weren’t really enticing or engaging enough getting new equipment parts and customizing your gun to your liking down to individual parts and components it’s pretty awesome but that’s really where it stops the other stuff the light RPG upgrade elements for gadgets stamina and aim stability don’t really feel like enough to keep me going alone or really playing through a lot of this game because I think that’s going to vary for some people because if you do like a little bit of the sandbox elements of the world and you do like exploring you might find a reason to keep playing through because if you’re looking for an open world filled with dudes to shoot especially with your friends wild lands might be your thing however though I think if you’ve played the beta that gives you a pretty good assessment of what to expect with you’re either gonna love it or feel kind of underwhelmed because for me it didn’t quite think its hooks in me as deep as I was hoping it’s not amazing but there’s still plenty to be had here because if you’re just looking for pure content here Ghost Recon wildlands you will probably get your bang for your buck for quite some time but you know that’s hello before you buy works I give you some pros some cons and some personal opinion and now I want to hear yours down in the comments if you hopped into Ghost Recon day one let me know your experience if you’ve been a fan of the series for a long time but you’re looking from the outside in I want to know what you’re thinking as well also if this is your first Ghost Recon game let me know what you think or if you just straight-up hate this game I’m pretty sure you’re going to be commenting too but as always guys thank you so much for coming around and checking this out clicking Essay Writing For Dyslexics

hey and run it’s Jemima welcome back to my channel today I’m going to be giving you my top 5 tips on how to do that dreaded academic task essay writing so first off why is essay writing so hard for dyslexics well obviously we have a lot of trouble with spelling and putting our ideas into a written format it can be a really slow and laborious process it takes a lot more effort and I guess I like to explain it a little bit like almost translating our ideas into a second language by the time we actually get to do that we almost forget our ideas and then we end up having nothing on the page or very little on the page in the specified timeframe Before we jump into my top 5 tips the first question I would ask as both a student and maybe as a parent as well is you know is that task a hundred percent necessary to be completing and if it is necessary you know for Krita and all that sort of thing and is it a hundred percent necessary to produce that assessment in a written format does it really have to be an essay can instead I do an oral presentation to my teacher or perhaps I make a video and like I’m moving right now or perhaps I do a mind map or a poster or something that’s going to accurately display my knowledge of that topic rather than giving me a written essay that is probably going to display more of my weaknesses than my strengths and so that’s sort of tip 0 that would be my first question as soon as I get that academic task so once you and your parents have finally decided that yes that task is a hundred percent necessary and maybe yes it has to be in a written format my first tip is planning fairly obvious one but do not skip over this this is very important now obviously when you’re in in a primary school and the first couple years the second school they really emphasize planning to you they say young kids planning is great you should spend some time with it and then you get to you know your 10 year 11 year 12 and they go oh hold on no no no no planning is not cool anymore we got to do planning in two minutes or less absolutely ditch that advice planning is one of the most important steps for writing essays as a dyslexic student we tend to struggle a lot with organizing our thoughts and our ideas into a framework that we can understand and that our examiner can understand and by removing that planning step it all just won’t fall into place you’re almost setting yourself up to fail now what I would say about planning is don’t do it the way that your teachers taught you to don’t you know go step by step dot points and try and write it out in a linear format because you know we don’t think like that what I would suggest is to plan in my maps or pictures do it in a way that really works for you and works for your brain that will get your best ideas so for me if I try and write dot points and write it out in a line by line it’s so linear and it’s so constricting that I can’t branch out and think of the really weird ideas that are going to impress the examiner start with your main core topic in the middle and then branch out from there and and then once you’ve you know exhausted all the possibilities then you color-coded them or you group them together based on paragraphs so think outside the box and then bring it in to a normal person level so tip number two is to not write sequentially now what that means is don’t write an order when I was in year 12 I had a lot of text anxiety around my English exam and I was really really struggling to finish the exam even with extra time and so at that point I kind of had to go you know hey it’s time to think of something different think of a way that I could do this differently that is gonna show my skills and bring out the best work and so I went with my teacher and we figured out that I would start trying to not write in a linear format I would write you know the start of my introduction then I’d get an idea about my third paragraph while I was writing the introduction now go and write that idea down and then I might go up and do a bit of the second paragraph and then go and finish the introduction then write the third paragraph ending and then write the conclusion and then join it all together and you know if you’re a parent watching or if you’re non dyslexic watching I know that sounds crazy but to be honest it was the only thing that could work for me and yes I had to spend time at the end going through and making my ideas then flow but it meant that I can actually get my ideas out within the time frame while I was speaking about it otherwise I think we just forget like I think that’s the barrier guys I think we just forget our own ideas because that process is so laborious and slow and it’s almost like translating into a language that you’re not no you win by the time you do it you forget it so my advice is this write what you are passionate about at the time my third tip is to do all Corrections at the end obviously for running in that nonlinear format things aren’t always gonna flow the way that it flows if you’re writing in order but we don’t have three hours to write an essay so if that’s the way you can get the words out absolutely do that just make sure that you make it flow at the end you know go through don’t be the reread and pick up on all those mistakes now there’s all servers for spelling you know obviously if your handwriting something and you don’t have spellcheck you’re probably going to make a lot of spelling mistakes don’t get caught up on those mistakes I have a girl that I mentor at the moment and when she writes she you know it struggles with one word in terms of how to spell and she gets stuck on that word for ages just skip over it and come back and because what that does it is that it ends up disrupting all your ideas underline a word that perhaps you don’t know how to spell or it’s one to look up in the dictionary later and just come back to it at the end except so tip number four is to use speech-to-text now I’ve talked about speech-to-text in some of my other videos but it really is a great tool for writing really long bits of text like essays and if you are struggling to get your ideas out make sure that you try and use a speech-to-text program because then he can just spit them out as they come to you and then you can edit it later yeah microphone icon on your iPhone or iPad works really well or just using Siri another really good app for an iPad or an iPhone is my secretary it’s a free app and it’s kind of the only one I’ve come across lately but it has a pretty good accuracy on it or there’s you know the old dragon speak if you can’t use speech to text or don’t 1 2 that’s totally fine strongly recommend using a computer though computers are great for obviously spellcheck but they’re also great for editing if you’re not writing sequentially because you can easily leave spaces between things you can come back and add bits onto paragraphs you can jump around the text any way that you like they’re really helpful for that the other thing is that if you can’t use a computer then that’s also fine but we strongly recommend to number the paragraphs that you’re writing and at the time just so the teacher or the examiner can follow where you’re writing if you’re not writing sequentially so all you do is and you know say you’re writing the bit of the introduction you just put a little 1/4 paragraph 1 then you might leave a space and write on the second page and start writing paragraph 3 put a little 3 up in a circle that will help you keep track of where you’re writing as well but also let the teacher know where your paragraphs are in your own essay so I hope these tips helped you guys out if they do leave a comment below and share our an essay tips if you’ve got a few tips that you’ve developed over the years of writing essays or maybe you’re still a student and you just figured out a way how to get those ideas onto the page let everybody know I really want this to be a community of sharing ideas sharing tips and tricks and strategies so that everybody can use them thank you very much for watching and I’ll see you guys next time [Music]
